Charlie Shrem went from being a multi-millionaire to having almost nothing. Founder of BitInstant, Shrem was one of the first Bitcoin entrepreneurs. And it paid off big time. Until he allowed a customer to resell bitcoin on Silk Road, the infamous internet black market. Shrem spent one year in jail. Charles “Charlie” Shrem IV is an American entrepreneur and bitcoin advocate. In 2011 he co-founded the now-defunct startup company BitInstant, and is a founding member of the Bitcoin Foundation, formerly serving as vice chairman.
In December 2014 he was sentenced to two years in prison for aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money-transmitting business related to the Silk Road marketplace. He was released from prison around June 2016. In 2017, he joined Jaxx as its director of business and community development.
